Failure to Thrive :
When the rate of weight gain in children is below the standard growth compared to the children of same age and sex, it is known as failure to thrive. Physical skills like standing, sitting, walking, mental and social skills, secondary sexual characteristics are affected in these children with failure to thrive and they develop slowly compared to other children. Failure to thrive condition occurs to various factors such as defects in major organ systems, chromosome abnormalities such as down syndrome and turner's syndrome, complications of pregnancy, damage to the brain or central nervous system, anemia or blood disorders, which can cause difficulty in feeding an infant, gastrointestinal problems that result in malabsorption, long-term gastroenteritis, cerebral palsy, low birth weight and metabolic disorders. The other causative factors of failure to thrive include situations like emotional deprivation as a result of parental withdrawal, hostility or rejection.
