shingles :
Herpes zoster more commonly known as shingles, comes from the varicella-zoster virus the very same virus that causes chickenpox. Once this primary attack of chickenpox has declined, this varicella-zoster virus may remain latent in the nervous system for many years and then reactivates to produce shingles. Risk factors include elderly age, immunocompromised states, and stress. The symptoms begin with burning, itching, or pain on some part of the body. From these, red blotches appear and grow into this blister like fluid filled vesicle.
This rash usually develops on one side of the body. The torso is usually affected and the affected individual might also be accompanied by fever, fatigue, and even sensitivity to light. Treatment is mainly symptomatic, aiming at reducing symptoms and avoiding complications. Antiviral drugs, such as acyclovir, cut disease duration and severity by several fold if begun within the first three days. Pain control and topical therapies can be added. Shingles should not be left untreated and an immediate consultation has to be obtained.
