Prostate surgery, also known as prostatectomy, is a procedure where a part or whole prostate is removed. It is most commonly done in prostate cancer, prostatitis, enlargement of the prostate gland, prostate abscess, recurrent urinary tract infections, obstructive uropathy, benign prostatic hyperplasia condition that can significantly impact urinary function, and can lead to complications like urinary retention, persistent blood in urine, formation of gall bladder stones, frequent urinary infections, and kidney damage. Risks of prostatectomy can be anesthesia risks, healing problems, infection, need for a blood transfusion, blood clots, fluid buildup at the surgical site, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, dry orgasm, penile atrophy, and depression. Types of prostate surgery are simple prostatectomy, radical prostatectomy, open prostatectomy, laser prostate surgery, and robotic-assisted prostatectomy.
