Presbyopia :
Presbyopia refers to an eye condition where the eye loses the ability to focus on closer objects. It is usually seen between 35 to 50 years of age and is caused by the loss of elasticity of the eye lens that occurs due to the natural aging process. Symptoms of presbyopia are headaches, eyestrain, blurred vision, and the need to hold the reading material at a distance of arm's length. Factors that influence the risk of presbyopia are farsightedness, premature menopause, anemia, medications like allergy medicine, attention deficit medications, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antispasmodics, diuretics, diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cardiac and neurological conditions, history of eye or head trauma and cataract surgery. Diagnosis is made by visual acuity test, refraction test, and slit lamp exam. Treatment includes eyeglasses, contact lenses, topical pilocarpine eyedrops, and corneal inlay surgery.
