Portal Hypertension :
Portal hypertension is a condition where the pressure in the portal venous system is elevated. This is considered a serious complication of advanced liver disease. Portal hypertension is commonly caused by liver cirrhosis, which is caused by hepatitis C, alcohol-induced hepatitis, and nonalcoholic fatty liver. The other factors include schistosomiasis, granulomas of the liver and blood clots. The most common symptoms of portal hypertension that can be noticed are blood in vomit, bloating of the stomach associated with weight gain due to fluid accumulation belly, blood in stools, swollen legs and feet, mental confusion and disorientation. The potential complications of portal hypertension include ascites (fluid in the abdomen), gastrointestinal bleeding, low blood cell count, enlarged spleen, mild cognitive impairment, low blood oxygen and kidney failure.
