Pituitary Tumors :
Pituitary tumors are abnormal growths that are seen in the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is the smallest gland, which is the size of a pea, and is present in the brain. There are many types of pituitary tumors, like functioning tumors that produce hormones like growth hormone, known as somatotroph adenoma, drenocorticotropic hormone, called corticotroph adenoma, aluteinizing hormone, known as gonadotroph adenomas, thyroid-stimulating hormones like prolactin, called prolactinomas, and thryotroph adenomas. Non-functioning tumors that do not produce hormones will keep increasing in size and lead to pressure upon the pituitary cells. Micoradenomas are smaller, less than 1 cm. Macroadenomas will be about 1 cm or more than that. The symptoms that will be observed in case of a pituitary tumor will be headaches, pain in the face, seizures, pressure on the optic nerve leading to loss of side vision, and also resulting in double vision, nausea, eyelid drooping, and vomiting. These can be detected based on the blood tests, MRI scan, urine tests, visual field examination, biopsy, and CT scan. The management advised for tumors will be through surgical removal, medications, external beam radiosurgery, and radiation therapy.
