PCOD :
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a condition in which a woman's ovaries increase production of eggs, causing localized ovarian cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs. It is a hormonal disorder caused by hormonal imbalance, especially the presence of large amounts of androgens (male hormones) in body. The direct cause is unknown, but genetics, insulin resistance, and as we get older lifestyle factors play big role. Symptoms include irregular periods, excessive growth of facial hair and body acne, weight gain or loss, and thinning hair to infertility. Some women with PCOD also have a greater risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health problems later in life. Treatment mainly focuses on symptom control and improving the general health. A balanced diet, along with regular exercise and lifestyle modifications, is what doctors often prescribe. Medications are used to regulate the periods, in cases of abnormalities in androgen levels and to reduce the androgen levels and to assist with fertility if needed. Consulting a gynecologist helps in proper diagnosis and long-term health.
