Osteoporosis :

Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone disease effecting the elderly people (women>men) after 50 years of age which occurs due to decreased bone density leading to pathological fractures due to weak bones. It can be primary osteoporosis (old age, post menopausal females) or secondary osteoporosis which occurs due underlying medical conditions like chronic kidney disease, myeloma, coeliac disease, hyperparathyroidism, certain medications etc. symptoms of osteoporosis is mainly fractures of hip, vertebrae, wrist and other bones due to small injuries and falls, back pain, loss of height etc. Diagnosis is by DXA scan ie,. Dual Energy X-Ray absorptiometry. Management is by lifestyle changes and medications like bisphosphonated , zolendronic acid, denosumab,teriparatide, romosozumab etc., depending on the age ,fracture risk and results of the scan.
