Neuropathy :
Neuropathy common term used for peripheral neuropathy is a condition that effects peripheral nerves system specially damage or disease of sensory and motor nerves. It causes impairment in normal function like sensation and movement. This condition can be sudden or gradual in onset and reversible or permanent. Causes include diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, alcohol, nerve injury, infections like leprosy, shingles, HIV. Auto immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory de-myelinating polyneuropathy, Sjogren's syndrome and other bone marrow and inherited diseases can lead to this condition.
Symptoms include numbness, loss of sensation, loss of muscle control, abnormal gait, tremors. Later they may also develop pricking pain, tingling, extreme intolerance to touch and heat. Treatment of neuropathy depends on the underlying cause that is leading to this condition. Removal of cause and symptomatic treatment helps in reliving symptoms. Strict management of diet by not having gluten, regular exercise, refraining from alcohol and tobacco smoking and psychological counselling should be maintained.
