Narcolepsy :
Narcolepsy is chronic neurological disorder and one of the primary causes of hypersomnolence (excessive sleep) in which there is sudden, irresistible sleep attacks, excessive day time sleep and cataplexy (muscle weakness or sudden loss of muscle tone triggered by surprise, laughter, strong emotions etc). It can of two types ie,. Narcolepsy type 1 (cataplexy present) and Narcolepsy type 2 (without cataplexy). It can be debilitating in the patients as it can occur during any time of the day and especially dangerous when involved in eating , driving and or swimming. The exact cause of narcolepsy is unknown. It is diagnosed by symptoms, sleep study with sleep latency testing demonstrating rapid REM sleep. Management is by medications like modafinil, sodium oxybate, antidepressants and other supportive care.
