Myomectomy :
Removal of fibroids from the uterus is known as myomectomy. Fibroids, if left untreated, may cause severe pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Myomectomy is preferred to remove these fibroids as after this procedure, women would have a chance to become pregnant again in the future. It is an alternative procedure for hysterectomy. Hysterectomy is a procedure where a surgeon removes the uterus along with fibroids. Several approaches are there to remove myomectomy, which include open myomectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, and hysteroscopic myomectomy. The surgery approach would depend upon the size, number, and location of fibroids. An open myomectomy is done for larger fibroids, and a large incision is given on the abdomen. The patient needs to be hospitalized for 2-3 days, whereas laparoscopic and hysteroscopic myomectomy is done through a small incision and hardly takes 1-2 days of hospital stay. Although the surgery is safe, some risks are associated with the surgery, which includes bleeding, damage to the surrounding organs, allergic reactions to anesthesia, etc. Medical management always include a wait and watch approach and hormonal medications to suppress the ovaries.
