Menorrhagia :
Menorrhagia also known as heavy menstrual bleeding is a menstrual period with excessive or heavy flow. It usually lasts for more than 7 days, or total menstrual flow of >80ml per cycle. Symptoms and signs include increased menstrual flow, soaking of pad or tampon at least every 2 hrs, passing of blood clots, waking in the middle of the night to change , increase in frequency of menses, fatigue, weakness, pale skin , shortness of breath due to anemia may be seen. It can occur due to various factors like uterine fibroids, hormonal imbalance, IUD (intra uterine devices) , thyroid disorders, medications like anti coagulants, anti-inflammatory agents , kidney or liver diseases, coagulation defects although rare, endometrial polyp. Endometrial cancer, PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), Adenomyosis, miscarriage, PCOS (polycystic ovarian disease), STI (sexually transmitted infection) etc,. It can be diagnosed with medical and menstrual history, pelvic examination, imaging like ultrasound ( abdominal or transvaginal) , MRI , hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy etc,. Management includes finding out the underlying cause and treating it.
