Leptospirosis :

Leptospirosis is an bacterial infection caused by an organism called leptospira. These infections are generally spread through urine of infected animals of rats, dogs and other animals. Risk factors include people who work in outdoor environment who has exposure to animal urine, participating in adventure sports such as swimming, etc and people who travel to areas which have high rate to leptospirosis cases. The symptoms usually appears two weeks after the exposure and appears in 2 phases viz., acute phase or early stage and second phase or immune phase.

During acute phase symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, muscle pain, loose stools are seen. While second stage symptoms are result of damage to organs like kidney, lungs, liver, eyes, coverings of brain and spinal cord. These can cause severe symptoms which may some times leads to death of the person. Diagnosis can be done by blood investigations, testing of cerebro spinal fluid and urine test.
