Leg Ulcers :
Leg ulcers are formed when the skin breaks up due to inflammation. Most leg ulcers are open, and they may even contain puss, which might be oozing out continuously. Patients with underlying diseases like uncontrolled blood sugars, peripheral artery disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, chronic venous insufficiency, obesity, varicose veins, unhealthy lifestyles, such as chronic smoking and alcohol, and lack of proper diet and exercise are more prone to develop leg ulcers. Symptoms include dry skin, leg pain, discoloration of the skin, swelling of the foot, and oozing of puss or serous liquid. Diagnosis is made by a physical examination, ankle-brachial index test, and biopsy in few cases. Treatment generally includes the administration of antibiotics, applying bandages and stockings, and procedures like debridement and skin grafts if necessary. Leg ulcers, if left untreated, might lead to sepsis, cellulitis, severe infection.
