Knock Knees :
Knock knees also known as Genu valgum is a condition in which the when the legs are straightened the knees angle in and touch each other. Knock knees can occur due to various reasons like rickets or osteomalacia ( vitamin-D deficiency), osteochondrodysplacia, osteoarthritis , rheumatoid arthritis, trauma or injury, genetics, obesity, neurological conditions like cerebral palsy , spina bifida etc,. People with knock knees experience difficulty in walking or standing due to the inwards bending and touching of the knees, pain and discomfort, limited mobility and stiffness etc., Diagnosis can be done by physical examination , medical history and history of diet and exposure to sun (source of vit-D) , imaging tests ( X-rays, MRI).
Treatment of genu valgum in children is correcting the underlying cause like supplementation of vit-d , calcium rich diet , correction of rickets, sun exposure. If conservative treatment is not correcting the condition guided growth surgeries can be done. In adult it depends on treating the cause, decreasing the weight, low impact exercises, physiotherapy and bone corrective osteotomies can be attempted in some cases.
