Iritis :

Iritis, or anterior uveitis, is a form of inflammatory disease involving the iris that colored part of the eye. It can be very painful and generally comes on acutely. Iritis sometimes is associated with autoimmune diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus. It may also be associated with infections like herpes, syphilis, or tuberculosis. In some cases no cause for the iritis can be found. This complication can lead to redness in the eyes, pain, photophobia, blurred vision and also a small or irregular pupil. If this complication is not treated promptly scarring in the involved area would ensue thereby resulting in a patient permanently being blinded at the location or triggers other diseases like glaucoma or cataracts that have to be operated on.General treatment involves a strict use of ophthalmic corticosteroid drops in order to reduce inflammation. A dilating drop will ease the patient and also avoid adhesion of the iris with the lens. More serious or recurrent cases can be worse thus requiring systemic medication along with additional treatment to treat the cause of the disease. Treatment for an acute attack may also prevent irreversible damage to the eye.
