Hole in Heart :

It is a congenital condition in which there is a defective opening in the wall (septum) between the upper chambers ie., atria-atrial septal defect or lower chambers ie, ventricles - ventricular septal defect. ASD can occur due to Downs syndrome, Ebsteins anomaly, fetal alcohol syndrome, Holt-Oram syndrome, Lutembacher's syndrome etc,. Patients with uncorrected atrial septal wall defect may be at increased risk for developing cardiac arrythmia and frequent respiratory infections, decompression sickness, Eisenmenger's syndrome, paradoxical embolus, migrane etc.

The signs and symptoms of ASD depends on the size of the intracardiac shunt. Individuals with a larger shunt tend to present at a younger age. Adults with uncorrected ASD presents with shortness of breath with minimal exercise, congestive heart failure, stroke . Most cases can be diagnosed in the uterus or in early childhood using ultrasound or by hearing the heart sounds during physical examination, echocardiography, transcranial doppler bubble study, echocardiogram etc., .If ASD is not causing any significant problems it can be alone and check for every two to three years. ASD can be closed surgically or percutaneous closure depending on the individual case .
