Duodenal Ulcer :
Duodenal ulcers are open sores in the lining of the top part of the small intestine called duodenum and are also known as peptic ulcers. The warning sign of a duodenal ulcer is burning or dull pain the stomach between meals. This type of pain awakens the affected individuals at night. The other presenting complains of duodenal ulcers include feeling full after eating small amounts of food, loss of appetite, burping, nausea, vomiting, losing weight without trying, bloody or black stool and blood in vomit. To diagnose duodenal ulcers, imaging tests such as upper GI series or barium swallow and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or upper endoscopy and lab investigations such as urea breath test, stool antigen tests and blood tests are conducted. The management of duodenal ulcers involves various methods like making lifestyle modifications such as not eating certain foods, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, quitting smoking, prescribing medications and not using medications like aspirin and ibuprofen.
