Colposcopy :
Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure which is used to visualize the vagina and cervix. It consist of specially designed magnified lens which helps in looking for any signs of inflammation or any infections in the cervix, vagina and vulva. Colposcopy is done by using a thin instrument called Colposcope which contain a light and magnification glass at one end.
The vaginal is held open in a place by the help of a vaginal speculum and the colposcope is introduced into the cervix through vagina. Several conditions related to reproductive tract such as infections of cervix, growths or polyps in cervix, genital warts, presence of any precancerous changes at squamo columnar junction of cervix, cancers of cervix, vagina and vulva. At times a small sample of tissue is taken out under the name biopsy to further investigate regarding the type of condition. However colposcopy can cause bleeding and infections if not used properly.
