Cervical incompetence :
This condition results in a miscarriage before gestation period ends or leads to premature birth where the baby is born before thirty seven weeks. In normal conditions, the cervix is closed firmly and as the gestation period ends, the cervix usually softens. This necessitates the delivery process. With cervical insufficiency the fetus is at risk as the cervix softens without any contractions associated.
The treatment and management options for Cervical incompetence aim to prolong pregnancy till full term is reached. A procedure called a cervical cerclage can be done if there is history of miscarriage. In this procedure the cervix is held together with stitches after fourteen weeks of gestation.
