CABG / Open Heart :
CABG is an open heart surgery and stands for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. Open heart helps to treat multiple blockages, restores the normal blood flow to different areas of the heart and reduces the risk for follow- up procedures. CABG is recommended to manage a wide range of heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, heart attack and myocardial ischemia. The diagnostic tests that are conducted before an open heart surgery include ECG, cardiac catheterization, echocardiogram, X-ray angiography, CT scan angiography, nuclear cardiac stress test, exercise stress test, coronary calcium scan and lab tests like urine analysis and complete blood count. There are various ways of performing CABG such as off-pump CABG, minimally invasive CABG, robot- assisted CABG and hybrid CABG. There are certain risks associated with open heart surgery, which include bleeding, irregular heart rhythms, infections, kidney problems, confusion, heart attack and stroke.
