Breast Abscess :
A breast abscess is the accumulation of pus in breast tissue, resulting from infection caused by invading bacteria within the tissue. The broad cause of this infection is found in breast feeding women, also known as lactational mastitis in which milk ducts get blocked and infected. This also happens in some non breast feeding women due to some infection, injury, or having an underlying condition such as diabetes or any type of immune disorders. The swelling is painful, swollen, red, warm, febrile, and diffuse soreness. The area will be over taut shiny skin. If left untreated, infection may be more severe or spread and cause more disabling complications. Treatment usually involves evacuation of the abscess, often by aspiration with a needle, sometimes by surgical incision. All this depends on the size and nature of the abscess. Antibiotics would be prescribed for the condition behind the infection. Medications like ibuprofen can help with management of discomfort and inflammation. Women with a breast abscess can in most cases continue to breastfeed or pump and should report to a medical facility for professional advice on this issue. Even if the condition is caught early, complications may arise, as well as recurrence.
