Athlete's Foot :
Tinea pedis, otherwise commonly known as athlete's foot is actually one of the most common fungal infections that cause infection on the skin on the area of the foot but specifically between the toes. The condition is brought about by a type of fungi referred to as the dermatophytes. These are the genera of fungi that thrive well in warm and moist settings. The condition is common with athletes because it often occurs in public places such as the gymnasium, swimming pools and locker rooms, but literally anyone could have it.
The symptoms include itchiness, burning, and redness, peeling or cracking of the skin mainly in the areas between the toes. It sometimes causes blistering on the skin and that disables many, causing discomfort and pain. Sometimes the infection may progress to the toenails and even to the hands if one has bad hygiene.
Treatment is usually topical or oral antifungal medication, depending on the severity. Even simple care, including keeping the feet clean and dry while they heal, can rule out an infection by avoiding the wearing of poorly ventilated shoes and using moisture-wicking socks. This also prevents reinfection because walking barefoot in public places is now contraindicated. Cultivation of routine hygiene for the feet and careful observation of symptoms are the mainstays of managing this very common disease.
