Ataxia :
Ataxia refers to the condition of poor muscle control that causes clumsy movements that affect walking and balance, hand coordination, speech, swallowing and eye movements. Damage to the cerebellum, ears, or other part of the nervous system results in ataxia. Ataxia can be acquired, degenerative or hereditary. Acquired causes include alcohol intoxication, certain medications, toxins, thyroid conditions, stroke, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, head trauma, and infections. It can be diagnosed through blood tests, imaging studies, lumbar puncture, and genetic testing. Treatment plans for ataxia vary based on the cause of the condition. They include medical management, adaptive devices and therapies like physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Ataxia can itself be a condition or a symptom of a condition that affects the brain, ear, and nervous system. It is a serious medical condition that needs medical intervention from a Neurologist for better management and limiting the disruptions of a healthy life.
