Ankylosing spondylitis, also called axial spondylarthritis, is a type of arthritis that usually affects the joints of the spine. Ankylosing spondylitis also affects the joints of the shoulders, knees, and hips, too, and is an autoimmune disease. The presenting complaints of ankylosing spondylitis include pain in the buttocks, neck pain, lower back pain, stiffness in moving the hips, fatigue, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, diarrhea, loss of appetite, vision problems, and skin rashes. Ankylosing spondylitis is mostly observed in males, those who are younger than forty, and with a similar family history. The risk factors associated with ankylosing spondylitis include ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis. To diagnose ankylosing spondylitis, various investigations like sacroiliac joint and spine X-rays, blood tests to check for a specific mutated gene, and an MRI scan are conducted. Ankylosing spondylitis is treated by taking medications and through surgical intervention.
