Twin Pregnancy :
Twin pregnancy means bearing two offspring during the same pregnancy which can be either monozygotic or dizygotic. A twin pregnancy occurs under rare circumstances such as family history, fertility treatments or other factors. The most reliable method of confirming a twin pregnancy is prenatal ultrasound which produces images of the uterus. This condition is classified as a high risk pregnancy due to its complexities and increased potential complications as a result of which a women bearing twins require frequent prenatal visits for appropriate management and careful monitoring of the condition.
Majority of the twin pregnancy end in preterm delivery i.e., before 37 weeks of pregnancy unlike the singleton pregnancy which typically lasts for about 40 weeks. Pre-Eclampsia, gestational diabetes, anemia, placental abruption, polyhydramnios are some of the complications associated with twin pregnancy. Having multiple births may be same as other new borns but one might require more special care and support in this arduous journey.
