Radial Angioplasty :
Angioplasty is a procedure done in patients having coronary artery disease(CAD) in which the coronary arteries (that supply oxygenated blood to the heart ) that are blocked due to plaque/fatty deposits (decrease or entirely block the blood supply to the heart) are cleared thus restoring the heart's blood supply. Due to various factors like high blood pressure, smoking , alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, higher consumption of carbohydrates and fats, males, females (females carry almost equal risk of MI/heart attack as their male counterparts after entering the menopause) , higher cholesterol or triglycerides, diabetes mellitus, older age etc. might lead to narrowing of the vessels leading to CAD/ ANGINA (chest pain due to decreased blood supply to the heart tissue) which if ignored may lead to MI (myocardial infarction) also known as heart attack. Radial angioplasty is a procedure where a long thin catheter is inserted into the radial artery which enters the coronary vessels and helps to clear plaque and a mesh may be used later thus restoring the blood supply to the heart.
