Myasthenia Gravis :
Briefly referred to as MG, Myasthenia gravis is the name assigned to an autoimmune disease of the muscles characterized by weakness and specifically rapid fatigue of some voluntary muscles. The exact cause is unknown, but its etiology is believed to be associated with thymus gland abnormalities. Involvement varies from muscle weakness that worsens with exercise but improves with rest, drooping of eyes-eyelids, face, throat, or limbs.
Diagnosis includes clinical examination, blood tests for specific antibodies and electromyography, or the measurement of muscle responses. Principal treatments include pharmacotherapy that enhances improvement in muscle strength, including the anticholinesterase inhibitor pyridostigmine, enhancing nerve-muscle communication, immunosuppressives, which induce a downturn in the activity of the immune system and, in some patients, surgical removal of the thymus gland. Important outpatient care and supportive therapies focus on prevention of complications and maintenance of symptomatic management and quality of life.
