Leukoplakia :
Leukoplakia is an oral condition characterized by the presence of painless white or gray patches inside the mouth. Leukoplakia is categorized into two types, which are homogenous leukoplakia and nonhomogenous leukoplakia. Leukoplakia also includes subtypes such as proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and oral hairy leukoplakia. The common symptoms of leukoplakia are patches seen on the tongue, gums and inside of cheeks that do not go away, patches that look flat and in white, gray, or white with tiny red dots. Leukoplakia occurs mainly due to genetic changes and also because of dentures that do not fit well. People who smoke or chew tobacco, those who are into substance abuse and those with weakened immune systems, Epstein virus and HIV affected people are highly prone to this disease. The treatment approach for leukoplakia involves using laser to remove the patches, light-activated cancer drugs, using cryotherapy and electrocauterization.
