Ophthalmologists are known as eye doctors and are trained to improve vision and other issues related to ocular region. They not only perform thorough eye examinations to prescribe glasses and contact lens, but perform several delicate eye surgeries. Ophthalmologists perform cataract surgery under local anesthesia where the clouding of lens is removed to improve vision. They use LASIK or Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis to correct the refractory power of the eye like nearsightedness and farsightedness or in some cases astigmatism. Glaucoma surgeries to reduce pain and intra ocular pressure is performed by ophthalmologists to preserve sight and prevent blindness. When there is a trauma to the eye, there is chance of retinal detachment especially seen in sports injuries. Retinal re attachment can be done which is considered as an emergency procedure. Blindness can be as a result of various corneal diseases and corneal transplantation is done to restore sight.
