Melanoma :

Melanoma is malignant skin cancer that develops in the melanocytes most commonly in skin , but may rarely seen in mouth, intestines or eye. Most important cause of melanoma is exposure to UV/ultra violet light especially those with light skin(less melanin in the skin). UV light can be either from sunlight , tanning beds etc,. other risk factors are family history, fair skin , light hair colour, weak immune system, many moles, xeroderma pigmentosum etc,. Signs of melanoma may be new or changing mole symmetry, colour changes(black, brown , tan, red, white), diameter>6mm, evolving size and shape, itching or bleeding , pain /tenderness etc.

Diagnosis can be made by physical examination, dermatoscopy , biopsy of the effected area(punch or excisional biopsy), imaging tests like MRI , PET may be used to determine the spread of the cancer , lymph node examination is done. Depending on the stage of cancer and spread of the disease management involves wide local excision, lymph node dissection, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy , palliative care should be given with regular followup visits to the doctor.
