Neuro Ophthalmologist :
A neuro ophthalmologist is a medical doctor and a specialized eye doctor who diagnoses and treats eye diseases associated with the nervous system. The academic qualifications needed to become a neuro ophthalmologist include MBBS graduation followed by post graduation, MS or DNB in Ophthalmology and an additional super specialization degree in Neuro-ophthalmology. A neuro ophthalmologist commonly treats eye conditions such as optic neuritis, toxic or nutritional optic neuropathy, squint or strabismus and papilledema. The presenting complaints addressed by a neuro ophthalmologist include sudden decrease or loss of vision, sudden transient loss of vision, visual hallucinations, intractable headaches, pupillary abnormalities, double vision or diplopia, visual field defects, inability to tolerate bright light and sudden onset of difficulties in identifying colors. A neuro ophthalmologist evaluates these by running tests like orthoptic evaluation, lumbar puncture, diplopia charting, neurological visual field screening, imaging studies including MRI, CT and MR venogram.
