A nephrologist is a highly-trained specialist who can diagnose and treat problems in the kidneys and urinary tract. Nephrologists are the right specialists to consult for problems like kidney failure, renal hypertension, kidney stones, renal artery stenosis, tubular defects and renal tumours.
The qualifications of a nephrologist are MBBS followed by an MD in General Medicine and then a super-specialization degree such as DM in Nephrology. Some doctors become nephrologists by doing a fellowship after their post-graduation instead of earning another degree. These specialists begin diagnosing their patients by performing a medical interview and doing a physical exam. Next, they order blood tests, urine tests and imaging scans to determine the underlying kidney problem. In some cases, nephrologists order a biopsy to check whether an individual has developed cancer. In many cases, nephrologists treat their patients with oral medications combined with lifestyle changes.
