Vitiligo :
Vitiligo is a harmless, chronic skin condition characterized mainly by the areas of de-pigmentation and de-coloration from the normal skin tone. These lighter areas are called macules or patches, depending on their diameter. Even the hair present on the affected skin area turns gray or white. It is caused by a change in the composition of melanocytes, which secretes the melanin pigment. It predominantly affects the skin of the face and upper and lower limbs. Factors such as chronic stress, genetic mutations, exposure to UV radiation, and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders and psoriasis can increase the risk of developing vitiligo condition. It is classified into different types based on the distribution of the macules or patches, such as generalized, segmental and focal. A dermatologist will clinically evaluate, diagnose and treat this condition for cosmetic purposes with medications, de-pigmentation or light therapy and surgical correction.
