Radial Angioplasty :
Radial angioplasty is performed on patients to clear the blockages formed in the upper extremities .It is a minimally invasive procedure performed through radial route under fluroscopy. A thin catheter along with the balloon is inserted through femoral route and placed near the narrowed part of the vessel , the plaque is pushed towards side resulting in free flow of blood to the upper limbs. In some cases even a stent is placed to support the arteries .Some of the complications post procedure include hematoma , injury to the arteries , bleeding , and restenosis .Prior to radial angioplasty a cardiologist or an interventional radiologist might advise basic blood investigations , peripheral angiogram and doppler of peripheral vessels. Patients with underlying disease like peripheral vascular disease, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus , hypertension and unhealthy life like smoking and alcohol abuse are more prone to undergo this procedure. Post procedure patient might develop certain complications which might include hematoma , bleeding , injury to other vessels and vasovagal episodes.A regular follolw up with cartdiologist or an interventional radiologist is mandate after procedure.
