Thrombophlebitis :

Thrombophlebitis is a medical condition in which there is an inflammation of the veins , the vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the organs to heart often in the legs due to a blood clot also known as thrombus. It can occur in the as a superficial thrombophlebitis where peripheral veins present under the skin are affected or in deep veins known as Deep vein thrombophelebitis(DVT). The risk factors for thrombophebitis include blood clotting disorders, infection, chronic uncontrolled diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, hormonal changes, pregnancy , oral contraceptive pills, protien C, protien S deficiency ,etc. The signs and symptoms include pain, tenderness at the site, local rise of temperature, redness and discoloration, weakness etc. Management includes anti coagulants, thrombolytics, pain management,lifestyle modifications, surgical intervention if necessary and other supportive care.
