PTCA and stenting :

Per cutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty PTCA and stenting are procedures used to treat coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is a common heart diseases that affects the blood vessel that supply blood to the heart muscle this happens because of the build up of fat, cholesterol or other substance in the artery walls. Per Cutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty involves the passage of a thin tube called as a catheter, with a deflated balloon.

The catheter is guided through a large artery and advanced carefully into the blocked portion of the artery. The balloon is inflated to squash or push the plaque against the artery resuming normal blood flow. Stenting is often consecutively performed with PTCA which utilizes a short, wire mesh tube called as the stent acting like a scaffold, and aids in keeping the artery open in order to facilitate the normal blood flow. Both PTCA and stenting are minimally invasive procedure preferred over the traditional open heart surgery due to its minimal hospital stay and favourable treatment outcomes.
