ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) :
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) stands for Atrial Septal Defect, which is commonly referred to as a hole in the heart. In this congenital heart defect, an abnormal opening is present in the wall dividing the two upper chambers of the heart (atria). ASD can be diagnosed and treated successfully, without much complications.
Due to ASD, a swishing sound is produced when increased blood volume flows towards the lungs. This is called a "heart murmur". This sound, along with other specific heart sounds gives an indication to the doctor that the child is suffering from ASD. Symptoms of ASD depends on its size and location and includes poor appetite, slow growth, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, etc.
