Proteinuria :
The kidneys are responsible for filtering wastes from the body. Healthy kidneys do not let proteins enter the urine. Proteinuria is a condition in which the kidneys release too much protein via the urine. It can be a sign of chronic kidney diseases such as kidney failure. Proteinuria usually affects senior citizens and individuals with high blood pressure and diabetes.
Proteinuria can cause symptoms like increased urination, shortness of breath, swelling around the body, tiredness, nausea and lack of appetite. Other symptoms include puffiness around the eyes, muscle cramps and foamy urine. A urologist can diagnose this condition by inquiring about the symptoms, performing a physical exam and ordering a urinalysis. Other tests like GFR blood test, kidney imaging tests and kidney biopsy may be required. The treatment involves managing the underlying cause with diet changes, medications and surgery.
