Vaginal discharge is described as the release of a whitish, clear fluid from the vagina and is a normal condition that occurs in women. Vaginal discharge that occurs due to an underlying infection or a medical condition shows changes in consistency, amount, color or smell. Brown or red colored vaginal discharge occurs due to pregnancy or irregular menstruation. Bacterial or sexually transmitted infections are caused by yellow, green or grey colored vaginal discharge. Infections like bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, yeast infection, chlamydia, and gonorrhea also cause vaginal discharge. The non infectious causes of vaginal discharge include irritation or rash from something that causes an allergic reaction, atrophic vaginitis, an object in or near the vagina that shouldn't be there, ovulation and pregnancy. The management of vaginal discharge conditions involves following steps like wiping the vagina from front to back, using mild soap and water to gently clean the vulvar area once daily and avoiding using perfumed soap, gels or wipes.
