UTI in Adults :
UTIs are urinary tract infections that affect the urinary system, involving the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. The presenting complaints of UTI in adults are problems while urinating, urinary incontinence, frequent urination, urge incontinence, blood in the urine, fever, chills, cloudy, foul smelling and dark colored urine, pain in the flank, abdomen, pelvic area or lower back, pain while urinating and pain during sex. The major cause of UTI in adults is a bacterium called E.coli. The diagnostic tests that are conducted to confirm UTI in adults are urinalysis and urine culture, ultrasound, CT scan and cystoscopy. Various antibiotics used to treat UTI in adults are nitrofurantoin, sulfonamides such as sulfamethoxazole/ trimethoprim, amoxicillin, cephalosporins like cephalexin and doxycycline. To prevent any UTI in adults, the measures to be taken include practicing healthy hygiene habits, drinking plenty of fluids, changing urinating habits, changing birth control, using a water based lubricant during sex and changing tight fitting clothes.
