Spinal Disc herniation :
Spinal disc herniation is a condition in which a disc in spine is slipped or ruptured by the soft and cushion-like center part of the spinal disc being pushed or torn to the outer part and compressing the nerves in the spinal cord. This herniated spinal disc can cause severe lower back pain, weakness, and numbness. The causes of herniated discs can be trauma causing injury, degeneration of discs, and strain on the disc due to repetitive twisting, lifting, and bending. Spinal disc herniation is diagnosed through physical examination, imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, myelograms, and nerve conduction studies are done. This can be treated with medications to manage the pain, corticosteroid injections, physiotherapy, and surgery such as laminectomy, discectomy, spinal fusion, laminotomy, artificial disc surgery. There are prevention measures such as practicing proper lifting techniques, maintaining proper posture, having healthy weight, stretching, regular physical exercise, and avoiding smoking.
