Spinal Deformities :
Medical terms for abnormal curvatures or misalignments of the spine are called spinal deformity. It may be the cause of pains, dysfunction of parts of the body through affecting mobility sometimes or dysfunction of an organ. These include scoliosis which is over-curvature in the side to side direction of the spine, and kyphosis which entails excessive curvature in the upper back. The inward curve of the lower back is known as lordosis. Such deformities might result from genetic disorders, birth defects of the spine, trauma, or degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis.
The severity of symptoms varies depending on the nature and gravity of the deformity, but in general, they include back pain, asymmetrical shoulders or hips, inability to keep a straight posture and, in cases of the highest severity, even further complications secondary to compression of the chest cavity affecting respiration and heart function. It is diagnosed with a physical examination and X-rays and other imaging procedures assessing deformity of the spine. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and how it progresses. Some may require mere sessions of therapy, while others require bracing and surgery to make posture better, in prevention against further complications.
