These are minor growths of skin that occur in soft, dangling bodies of tissue. They most often occur where the skin touches against other body parts and therefore often occur in the neck, armpits, groin and eyelids. They are more common with age and amongst older adults, people who are overweight or have diabetes tend to develop them more frequently. However, any individual can get one. While skin tags are typically benign and painless, they can be irritated if they rub against clothing or jewelry. Rather frequently, they vary from flesh colored to darker shades and can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters.
Most patients do not need anything done unless the tag becomes pesky or for aesthetic reasons. Removal methods include cryotherapy tissue frosting, surgical excision, and electrosurgery. These are typically brief procedures and can sometimes be performed as out patient basis. Medical follow-up appointments should periodically be scheduled to assess any change in skin tags or to express concern about new growths.
