Peripheral Aneurysm :
A peripheral aneurysm is an enlargement or ballooning of an artery away from the heart and the brain, often at the popliteal artery, which is located at the back of the knee, or the femoral artery in the thigh. Common causes are atherosclerosis, genetic conditions, injury, and infections. In this condition, it may not be noticed but for those who have the growth of the aneurysm will experience pains, swelling, or even a pulsating mass. If it ruptures, it can be very complicating with internally bleeding. Diagnosis is usually made by imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scans. In the case of small aneurysms, an approach may be just monitoring, whereas with a larger aneurysm or one believed to be symptomatic, one will resort to surgery to either repair the area or bypass the portion of the artery to prevent further complications.
