Pericarditis :
Pericarditis is a heart condition characterized by inflammation of the pericardium, a structure that surrounds the heart. Pericarditis is classified into several types, such as acute, chronic, infectious, constrictive, idiopathic, uremic, traumatic, and malignant pericarditis. Chest pain is the major symptom of pericarditis and can be sharp and stabbing in nature and worsens while swallowing, taking deep breaths or lying flat, coughing and gets better while leaning forward and sitting. The other significant signs of pericarditis are difficulty in breathing while lying down, pain in the back or left shoulder, dry cough, anxiety or fatigue, palpitations, fever and swelling of the legs, feet and ankles. The major factors causing pericarditis include kidney failure, rheumatoid arthritis, complications of an infection, lupus, injury to the chest, scleroderma, tumors like lymphoma and familial Mediterranean fever. Pericarditis is treated by options like taking prescribing medications, draining the fluid if there is an accumulation and finally surgery, if nothing works out.
