Otosclerosis :

Otosclerosis is a condition of the ear affecting the middle ear causing deafness (mild to severe form) due to abnormal ossification. The risk factors for otosclerosis includes genetic predisposition (family history), viral infection like measles, pregnancy, race(caucasian white), osteogenesis imperfecta etc. The disease most often affects the stapes bone of the middle ear forming abnormal ossifications with the surrounding tissues and hampering its movement, leading to ineffective transfer of sound from middle ear to inner ear and brain leading to deafness, tinnitus(ringing or buzzing sensation I the ear), vertigo or dizziness, ear fullness etc. Audiometry, tympanometry, imaging studies(CT,MRI) are used to diagnose the disease and further management is done by the ENT specialist via hearing aids, surgery, cochlear implants etc, depending on the symptoms and severity of the disease.
