Nose block or nasal congestion is described as irritation and swelling of the tissues lining the inside of the nose. Nose block commonly causes trouble while breathing through the nose, mouth breathing, and trouble nursing or taking a bottle in babies, and a runny nose condition (mucus flow from the nose). Sometimes, a nose block is also accompanied by other presenting complaints such as cough, sneezing, and headache. The primary factors that cause a nose block include allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis. Dust mites, mold, pollen, and pet dander usually cause allergic rhinitis in a person. Non- allergic rhinitis occurs because of environmental causes like enlarged adenoids, certain medications like those for pain or high blood pressure, stress, hormonal changes like going through puberty, sinus infection, common cold, and exposure to smoke and paint fumes or spicy food.
