Night Blindness :

Night Blindness also known as Nyctalopia is a medical condition in which there is difficulty seeing in low light environments especially at night. Night blindness can occur due to various conditions like genetic disorders ( retinitis pigmentosa), vitamin A deficiency, eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration , medications like phenothiazines, neurological conditions like stroke, brain injury etc,. Night blindness presents as difficulty navigating in the dark, blurry vision at night, difficulty driving at night, increased sensitivity to glare, slow adaptation to changes in lighting etc,. Risk factors for night blindness include family history, poor nutrition, certain medical conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, aging etc.

Diagnosis is made by a comprehensive eye exam, visual acuity tests, refraction test, electroretinography (ERG), imaging tests ( OCT, ultrasound) , blood tests (vitamin A levels etc) to determine the underlying cause. Management is by vitamin A supplements, assistive devices like night vision glasses, lifestyle modifications ( increased lighting, avoiding driving at night),treatment of underlying conditions and genetic counseling if necessary.
