Narcolepsy :
Narcolepsy is a disorder in which an affected individual feels strong urges to sleep during the daytime. In most cases, the urges to sleep are impossible to resist. Other symptoms of narcolepsy include sudden muscle weakness, sleep paralysis and hallucinations. Narcolepsy can also cause automatic movements and forgetfulness.
The underlying cause of narcolepsy can vary, but most of the possible causes involve problems in the hypothalamus of the brain. The diagnosis of this condition involves several scans and tests of the brain and sleeping patterns. Some of the tests that may be involved include polysomnogram, spinal tap and MSLT. There is no cure for narcolepsy, but treatments can control the symptoms. A doctor may prescribe antidepressants, stimulants or various other medicines as a treatment.
